If you’re into salty, savory snacks but aren’t keen on their fat content, you need to meet our oven-baked oil-free tortilla chips. Perfectly crispy and endlessly customizable, they are made within 15 minutes and satisfy any craving!

We can probably agree that Mexican food is amongst the most delicious cuisines out there. Fortunately, it’s often rich in plant-based foods and lots of tasty spices, but it can be loaded with oil, salt and sugar.

While no problem for most people in smaller quantities, these ingredients can add up quickly — because who can stop themselves after just a handful of tortilla chips? Not us.

So, after having published our bean chili, tacos and bean burritos (which are all among the most popular recipes on our blog), we’ve decided to share our baked oil-free tortilla chips recipe with you which won’t disappoint, either.

They are just the perfect combination of delicious and healthy! We’ve been making them for years with all kinds of different dips (most of which we’ll share below!) and everyone’s been devouring them so far.

Even though they are oil-free tortilla chips, something you see very rarely, they don’t compromise on saltiness or flavor in our opinion! No frying needed, which saves us a bunch of empty calories and adverse health effects.

Let’s talk about why we like to go for oil-free tortilla chips instead of traditional store-bought ones, how easy it is to prepare and customize them as well as which dips you need to try!

Are Tortilla Chips Healthy?

Who doesn’t love crispy, dunkable and addictively salty tortilla chips? Served at many restaurants and a staple snack at most supermarkets, they have become many people’s go-to savory treat.

While most corn chips are fully vegan, about a third of their calories come from oil — making them a less-than-ideal snack choice.

Store-bought or restaurant-style tortilla chips are often also loaded with so much salt that a few of them already get you over your daily limit or make your lips hurt!

Especially when you’re already used to more homemade, whole food plant-based meals, store-bought salt- and oil-laden food can feel like an unpleasant explosion in your mouth — so much so that you find homemade oil-free tortilla chips to be even better than the junk food version.

What Are The Healthiest Chips?

Corn or maize is an overall healthy, whole-grain food — but its healthfulness highly depends on how you prepare and serve it.

The occasional oily corn chips might be okay for your body to handle but if you serve this naturally gluten-free and fiber-rich food closer to its original form, you can get even more benefits from it!

Generally speaking, sweet corn offers vitamins and minerals such as manganese, magnesium, zinc, copper, niacin and folate, but when served with trans fats in the form of tortilla chips, you miss out on its full potential!

That’s why refined foods-free (aka oil-free) tortilla chips, especially when served with some veggie-rich salsa or guacamole, are definitely among the healthiest savory snacks imaginable.

How to Make Baked Oil-Free Tortilla Chips

Making your own oil-free tortilla chips is just about the easiest thing you’ll ever do in your kitchen — almost easier than the washing up afterward.

Get a pack of corn tortillas, a sharp knife and a cutting board. Stack about 4 tortillas on top of each other and slice them into 6 triangles by halving them first, then cutting each half into three equal-sized pieces.

Repeat until you have created enough gluten-free tortilla chips for your liking!

Now, get a parchment paper-lined baking sheet (or several, depending on how much you’re going to make) and place the sliced tortilla chips next to each other in a single layer.

Drizzle your corn chips with lime or lemon juice, then sprinkle with a good pinch of salt and place them in your preheated oven for about 10 minutes.

We highly recommend paying attention during this time and checking in after 5-7 minutes to see whether your oven bakes them evenly or if you need to flip your oil-free tortilla chips halfway through to get the best results.

Once slightly brown and crispy, remove them and let your baked tortilla chips cool before serving with dips of your choice (find a bunch of ideas below).

Now, this recipe could actually be made with just one single ingredient: corn tortillas. No salt, no lime or lemon juice at all.

It really doesn’t get any simpler than that! And if you load the 1-ingredient oil-free tortilla chips with some flavorful dips, they will still make for a delicious snack.
