Isn’t bread just one of the best foods ever created? Fluffy, crusty, seeded, flavored or sweet — we love all the different types. If you share our devotion, then you’ll really appreciate these delicious vegan bread recipes (savory and sweet) we’ve hand-selected.
But is all bread vegan? What are the best vegan bread brands to buy at the store? And are there any health concerns regarding this versatile staple food?
Truth be told, some foods are easier to categorize into “vegan” or “not vegan” — namely, whole foods. That’s because you don’t have to decipher label after label when you go out buying potatoes or oranges.
Finding a good loaf of crusty or soft vegan bread, on the other hand, is much trickier! If you’re lucky, you can find the vegan label right on the product itself but not all brands (or bakeries, for that matter) bother marking their bread vegan.
While many traditional bread recipes are vegan, calling only for flour, water, salt, yeast and possibly some oil, there are some types of bread that are rarely vegan.
No need to miss out on delicious brioche or garlic bread on a fully plant-based diet, though! You can make these at home without any butter, eggs or milk at all.
Most of these white or sandwich-type loaves of bread can contain animal products to make them soft and taste really rich.
Let’s go over common non-vegan ingredients in bread, the most recommended vegan bread brands as well as our top 25+ vegan bread recipes!
Is Your Bread Vegan? Check For These!
Pretty much every time we reach for a processed and packaged food at the supermarket, we make sure to quickly check the label to see if it’s vegan (yeah, you develop the ability to scan any label within seconds after a few years!).
Here’s what to look out for!
- Milk, buttermilk, lactose, cream, yogurt
- Eggs, egg whites
- Butter, ghee, lard
- L-cysteine, caseinate, sodium caseinate
- Whey, casein
- Gelatine, honey
Some ingredients which may be animal-derived (but are most of the time vegan) include monoglycerides and diglycerides as well as lecithin and enzymes.
Wow, that’s a lot to be aware of, right? Fortunately, the healthiest types of bread don’t include cryptic ingredients at all and are made with straight-up real food.
